SeNtinel Application Platform (SNAP) is an open-source software developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) specifically designed for the visualization, processing and analysis of satellite images. It consists of a collection of tools for performing complex operations on data from multiple satellite missions, both conducted by ESA and third-party missions such as Landsat, TerraSAR-X, etc. The app has an intuitive and easy-to-use graphical interface.
The development of the software started in 2014 with the implementation of the European Union's Copernicus Earth Observation programme, integrating existing software tools: BEAM (developed since 2002 for Envisat data processing) and NEST (developed since 2008 to complement BEAM's capabilities to process radar data). SNAP functionalities implemented since then have focused on the exploitation of satellite data from the Copernicus Sentinel missions.
This practical guide is addressed, in particular, at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels in geosciences. This book is an introduction to the professional exploitation of optical satellite imagery for future graduates, but it can also be used successfully by specialists to develop practical skills useful in many fields of activity: disaster management, environment, agriculture, cultural heritage and applications for the security of the citizen.
The guide represents the French version, completed, adapted and updated of the Romanian version published by EX TERRA AURUM in 2021.
