More than 600 million people (around 10 per cent of the world’s population) live in coastal areas less than 10 metres above sea level, and 40 per cent of the world’s population lives within 100 km of the coastal zone. Meanwhile, by 2030, the coastal population is expected to increase by 50 per cent.122 In the past two decades, climate change, unplanned development and increased population have considerably increased disasters in coastal zones. In the next 50 years, the impact of climate change is predicted to substantially affect the impacts of coastal hazards, particularly tsunamis, storm surges and coastal erosion due to sea level rise.
