Space4Youth Competition 2021 launched

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) have launched the third edition of their Space4Youth competition. Under the title Youth4Climate, this year's focus is on climate mitigation and adaptation. In order to participate, students and young professionals from any Member State of the United Nations are invited to submit an essay on the topic "Space as a tool to foster climate mitigation and adaptation” by 26 April 2021.

ASIS tool by FAO helps monitor agricultural droughts and manage their risks at country level using EO data

In recent years, droughts have been impacting several regions of the world on a more frequent and severe basis. The long-lasting effects of such droughts are taking a toll on farmers and their livelihoods, forcing some of them to seek alternate sources of income through migration to cities in their countries and in other countries in extreme cases. The World Meteorological Organization identifies droughts as the most damaging natural hazard due to their long-term socio-economic impact.

Multi-risk information system initiated under the coordination of DLR to continue disaster risk management support in South America

The use of multi-risk information systems is crucial in confronting the increasing risks posed by natural hazards. In some cases, risk is increasing due to inadequate land-use norms or regulations that allow for the construction of infrastructure in areas exposed to such natural hazards.

Earthquake in Indonesia

A strong earthquake of 6.2 M hit the Western part of Sulawesi on the early morning of 15 of January. The epicenter of the quake was six km northeast of the city of Majene, at a depth of 10 km. According to media reports, at least 78 people were killed, 820 injured and 15,000 displaced. 

To support emergeny response efforts, UN-SPIDER has requested the activation of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters on behalf of the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

Fires in Tunisia

Upon the request of the National Office for Civil Protection (ONPC) of Tunisia, the UN-SPIDER programme produced and provided a map with fires detected during the 2020 fire season. The active fire data was obtained from the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), which provides MODIS Collection 6 (1km resolution) and VIIRS (375m resolution) active fire/hotspot information.
