Big Data from Space 2021

This is event is available for participation on an ongoing basis

The 2021 online edition of the Big Data from Space (BiDS) conference titled "From Insights to Foresight" will emphasise not only on the insights that can be retrieved from BiDS but also on the exploitation of these insights for foresight, that is our capacity of foreseeing. This capacity is becoming increasingly important given the pace at which the world is changing.

Copernicus Reseach and User Support (RUS)

RUS Copernicus organises a full day hands-on training session focussing on the processing of Sentinel-5P data to monitor atmospheric ozone layer above Antarctica.

Sentinel-5P was launched in October 2017 to screen the Earth’s atmosphere and quantify different pollutants (O3, CO, NO2, SO2, aerosols…) with a great accuracy and spatial resolution. It also provides measurement continuity with precedent and ongoing atmospheric spatial missions. The recorded data are free of use and present a great interest to globally monitor the ozone layer, air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and detect and assess the impact of polluting events.

After a detailed introduction on the Sentinel-5P mission and associated products, you will manipulate Sentinel-5P data to study the outstanding 2020 Antarctic ozone hole and validate your results against the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) ozone global analysis products. Python and the Atmospheric Toolbox on the Jupyter Notebook environment will be used throughout the workshop.

Attendance to this remote training session is free but requires registration before 16 April 2021.

Event Format

This event will take place Thursday, 29th of April 2021 between 10:00 and 17:00 CEST. For more information and registration click here.

ARSET - Satellite Observations and Tools for Fire Risk, Detection, and Analysis

This is event is available for participation on an ongoing basis

Fires are a growing concern, especially in regions with longer fire seasons, expanded wildland/urban interfaces, and severe and frequent droughts. Anthropogenic fires are commonly used to clear grassland and agricultural land prior to the planting season, and forests are often cleared using fires so the land can be repurposed for other uses. Whether naturally-occurring or anthropogenic, fires produce a significant change in the structure and reflectance of vegetation and soil properties and atmospheric chemistry.

Landslide in Mexico

Not featured

Seasonal cold fronts have brought more rain to several municipalities of Chiapas, in Mexico, which are suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane's Eta and Iota. This has caused flooding and landslides in Ixhuatan, Matzam, Tacuba and Juan de Grijalva. The extent of the landslides are not yet known, as access to some rural communities by road has been cut off.
